Grasslands and shrublands

Grasslands and shrublands naturally occur in only limited areas of Massachusetts. In coastal areas with acidic and droughty soils and on rocky mountain balds you might find naturally occurring grasslands or shrublands. Otherwise, these habitats typically occur in human-managed areas such as airports, hayfields, pastures, and powerlines.
