A very broad species type, amphibians are cold-blooded animals that spend part of their lives in water and land. They are vertebrates (i.e., have a backbone), permeable skin and no scales 2. All amphibian species have gills at some point in their lives, though some species don't keep them for very long and can get rid of them during metamorphosis (a transformative process during which an insect or amphibian goes through visually distinct stages on the road to adulthood), which most amphibian species will experience 2. Spring salamanders and marbled salamanders are examples of amphibians 1.
