Pests and diseases
There are many native and invasive forest pests and diseases that can either directly cause mortality, or weaken a tree so it is susceptible to other physical or biological stress. These pests and diseases often attack trees already weakened by drought or storm damage. There are many online resources to help you identify forests pests and diseases, in addition to the map shown here. Forest Pests of North America is one great place to start. Learn how to detect pests and diseases, what to do when you find them, and how to prevent their spread through the forests of the Northeast.
