This habitat1 was described as vulnerable to climate change because of the following factors:

  • Sea level rise will inundate low marsh, and convert high marsh to low marsh
  • Shifting precipitation patterns could increase erosion of salt marsh channels
  • Damaging extreme storm events
  • Lower salinity due to increased precipitation may benefit invasive species
  • Human response to sea level rise in the form of infrastructure will restrict tides and prevent salt marsh migration
